Future of Reintroduction

The future of wolf reintroduction looks promising. Americans have largely dispelled the "big bad wolf" myth and now find wolves a majestical beast to be admired. With continued efforts to subsidize rancher’s losses and educating the public, the wolf stands a good chance to survive in the lower 48 states.

  • In Arizona, wolves have been reintroduced. This effort was not condoned by the people and has largely failed. There are plans to continue the work and possibly release new wolves when public opinion is favorable.
  • In the Rocky Mountains there is a surviving pack, but no efforts as of yet to supplement the numbers.
  • In Idaho, wolves have prospered from a reintroduction but have met with some opposition from the ranching community.
  • In Yellowstone, wolf numbers are steadily increasing. Wolves have brought in tourist dollars and will continue to do so, as long as the public is interested in their survival.
